Dakin, four other organizations holding small pet adoption event at no cost

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) — This weekend, a first small pet adoption effort will take place in Massachusetts. It’s free and it’s coming just in time for Easter.

“A rabbit is waiting for you for Easter!” It’s the name of an online pet adoption event happening this weekend. Western Mass News stopped by Dakin Humane Society in Springfield on Thursday. Spokesperson Lee Chambers said that as Easter approaches, Dankin encourages giving children pets as gifts during the holidays.

“For years people have felt that adopting bunnies at Easter was a bad idea, that a child would have a bunny and be bored after a few days, that bunnies would be brought back into the shelters, but there’s no data to back it up. When pets come home, they tend to stay home,” Chambers explained.

For the first time ever, five animal welfare organizations in Massachusetts are hosting a small pet adoption event at no cost to adopters.

“This weekend is going to be pretty historic,” added Chambers.

The campaign aims to highlight the need for adopting small pets. Dakin said they are working to address the large number of pets like rabbits, guinea pigs and birds in shelters in our area.

“Moving them around with dogs is difficult, and cats are the first thing adopters want to know, but there are also many benefits for small pets,” Chambers said.

On Saturday, more than 250 small animals should be available between the five facilities. Adoption fees will be waived for those who submit their application by Sunday, April 10. The Springfield facility has only been doing remote adoptions since the pandemic began, so Chambers wants to remind potential adopters that Dakin’s event will be online only.

“Just click on an animal’s profile that says ‘Adopt Me,’ and that’s the process. It’s easy,” Chambers noted.

Chambers told Western Mass News that once applications are submitted, Dakin staff will review them and get back to potential adopters within days.
