Protecting and advocating for animals in San Diego County and statewide is a cause that I have supported throughout my career. In fact, I have written more animal welfare and welfare laws than any other California lawmaker.
Over the past few years, I have worked hard to strengthen laws against animal abuse, euthanasia, hunting, poaching, and a variety of other issues of importance to the animal community.
In 2019, the governor enacted my Bill AB 415, which provides compensation for victims of domestic violence who move their pets. This bill required that security deposits, pet deposits or both be refunded to victims who moved.
My Bill AB 1810 was passed in 2014, repealing the requirement for animal care facilities to euthanize abandoned animals after 24 days, giving shelters more flexibility to find a new home for the animal at- beyond these initial 24 days.
My Bill AB 2300 was also enacted in 2018, allowing veterinarians to take continuing education courses associated with sterilization and pro bono sterilization. In turn, this has reduced the tax impacts and euthanasia associated with overcrowding in animal shelters.
I have proudly partnered with the San Diego Humane Society for the past seven years to educate San Diego County on the importance of adopting and supporting animals in our area. This year, we are happy to continue this partnership and wish to invite you to our 8th annual pet adoption event.
At 9 a.m. on December 11, residents of San Diego County can visit a San Diego Humane Society location to participate in our pet adoption event. Find a complete list of San Diego Humane Society locations, an overview of the animals available for adoption, and information about the many amazing services the Humane Society offers on my website at asmdc.org/jx-petfair.
Hope you will join us for this special event on December 11th. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or my staff at (858) 675-0077.
