Indian government warns e-commerce sites against selling illegal wireless jammers – The Mobile Indian

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on Monday issued a notice to the general public July 1, 2022 on the proper use of wireless jammers, boosters, and repeaters. Additionally, the notice stated that private sector organizations and individuals could no longer use or procure jammers in India.

The notice mentions that the use of a cellular signal jammer, GPS blocker or other signal jamming device is generally illegal except those specifically authorized by the Indian government. “Private sector organizations and/or individuals cannot procure/use jammers in India,” the notice read.

“A mobile signal booster/repeater is a type of amplifier, apparently used to improve cell phone signal reception. However, the unauthorized use of mobile phone boosters may cause disruption, disruption to public telecommunications services by compromising the quality and coverage of these services. This not only causes inconvenience to mobile phone users, but can also impede access to emergency call services from mobile phones, creating a health risk and public safety,” the guidelines state.

The DoT further states that the relevant TSP should be contacted in case a user experiences quality of service issues or any other connectivity issues. At present, only States/UTs, Defense Forces and Central Police Organizations may procure (only Indian Government approved models) and use jammers.

Earlier this year, the DoT warned all e-commerce companies to sell or facilitate the sale of wireless jammers on their online platforms. This was done to ensure that no e-commerce platform was facilitating sales of wireless jammers, which the Center noticed some platforms were doing, as these are capable of disrupting networks authorized telecommunications and other wireless networks.
