New emergency pet hospital will help alleviate major needs in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – A new 24/7 emergency animal hospital called Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) will open September 14 at SouthPark.

VEG is a New York-based veterinary hospital with 32 locations in 11 states. Local vet and VEG medical director Ashley Gray brought the brand to Charlotte.

Why is this important: There is a shortage of veterinarians throughout the country and veterinary hospitals in the region are spread thin.

  • Hospitals and clinics across the country are turning away animals because they are understaffed, as the Atlantic recently reported.

“Our industry is going through a lot of difficulties right now,” says Gray, citing staffing shortages, burnout and compassion fatigue among the top reasons people leave the industry. “There just aren’t enough vets and vet techs to go around,” she adds.

  • VEG in Charlotte will include both local vets and some who move here, including some internal transfers, Gray says.

Rollback: About two years ago, Gray, who had worked at Charlotte-area animal hospitals for eight years, was unsure what her next step would be. “I wasn’t sure if I wanted to own my own practice or switch gears completely,” she says.

  • After a friend told her about VEG, she interviewed them and offered them a location in Charlotte. “Charlotte was not in their immediate line of sight,” she says, but as they investigated Charlotte, her rapid growth and her pet population, local expansion became a evidence.

How it works: VEG is laid out in an open concept, which means pet parents are allowed into the treatment area with their pets. The open layout concept also makes it easier for staff to see more pets. “I can easily see 40 patients on one shift as a doctor,” says Gray.

  • In the treatment area, which is the largest area in the hospital, pet owners can watch nurses and doctors do everything from surgery to inserting intravenous lines and drawing blood. “We believe in transparency,” Gray tells me.
  • VEG will open with 10 physicians and 30 additional support staff.
  • To note : VEG is an emergency hospital only, which means they do not perform vaccinations or handle any type of preventative care.

Details: VEG is located at 4716-A Sharon Road, Suite Anear the Homewares.

And after: VEG opens a store in Asheville at the end of September.
