Central Austin is gaining a pet hospital, while pet stores east and north of downtown have closed in recent months.
1. Banfield Animal Hospital opened a new location at 1211 E. Fifth St., Ste. 140, Austin, near Plaza Saltillo in late December. The national chain of pet hospitals has multiple locations in Austin, including 1201 Barbara Jordan Blvd. and 9300 S. I-35, Austin. It was founded in Portland, Oregon, and has more than 1,000 locations in the United States and Puerto Rico, according to its website.
2. North Austin Pet Store P&F Pet Provisions, formerly Phydeaux and Friends Pet Provisions, closed on January 2. The ad cited the pandemic as the reason for the store’s closure. The pet store, located at 7816 Burnet Road, Austin, offered products for cats, dogs, chickens and other animals. The store celebrated its fifth anniversary in March.
3. Prime Pet at 2400 E. Cesar Chavez St., Ste. 102 Austin, closed Oct. 31. According to a company spokesperson, the company closed due to “challenges presented by COVID[-19] and market conditions. The company opened its East Cesar Chavez location in March 2020 after leaving its East Sixth Street location in 2019.
