Plant City author writes bestselling book about ‘chonky’ cats

LAKELAND, Fla. — Victoria J. Saunders loves “chonky,” “floofy,” and “grompy” cats.

In fact, the Plant City author and digital artist loves tall, colorful kittens so much that she wrote and illustrated a bestselling hardcover picture book about them.

Recently, a #1 cat book on Amazon, “The Chonky Alphabet” is her love letter(s) to meaty felines, especially her own cat Mishka, who is a certified “unit”.

You don’t know what a “unit” is? Just open this original primer.

“U is for Unit,” Saunders, who goes by his married name, Vicky Smude, said on Instagram. “To use this in a sentence: ‘This cat is an absolute unit.’ Which means he’s just a fat cat!”

Saunders said “Mishka’s vet described her as a potato. So I thought that was the threshold to get her into chonkydom.”

“Chonky” is part of the online secret language of plump pet owners. It’s where Saunders found solace and smiles a few years ago when she was laid off from her job as a – wait for it – CAT scan tech in Lakeland.

“I loved continuing [chonky cat sites]she laughs. “I loved the community, and everyone was so positive.

So, to cheer him up, she started pairing chonky words with chonky illustrations.

And the rest is chonky history.

In the book, the letter Z is for “Zoomies” (meaning cats that run at breakneck speed), which Saunders had in human form when she discovered “The Chonky Alphabet” was number 1. for books about cats on Amazon.

“Oh, when I found out, I definitely had the Zoomies myself,” she said. “But Mishka just looked annoyed at me.”

Saunders will sign “The Chonky Alphabet” at the Tipsy Bookworm in Plant City on August 6 from 2-4 p.m. The event accepts pets (of course).
