TJ Maxx fined $13 million for selling recalled baby products linked to infant deaths

Department store TJ Maxx and its affiliates sold recalled baby sleepers from March 2014 through October 2019, resulting in at least 30 deaths, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The department store has agreed to pay a $13 million fine for selling several recalled products, including Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleepers.

While the CPSC says Rock n’ Play sleepers were linked to 30 infant deaths, a June 2021 congressional report found that more than 50 infants died using the product before any recalls were issued in 2019.

The congressional report accused Fisher-Price of keeping sleepers on the market for 10 years while racking up $200 million in revenue, despite knowledge of product safety issues and infant deaths.

TJ Maxx is also accused of selling another recalled infant sleeper called Kids II Rocking Sleeper that resulted in at least five infant deaths, according to the CPSC.

TJX Companies, the parent company of TJ Maxx, issued the following statement to NBC News:

“We deeply regret that in some instances between 2014 and 2019, recalled products were not properly removed from our retail floors despite the recall processes we had in place. We have made a significant investment in people, processes and technology to strengthen our processes, and have cooperated fully with the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
