A car took off the road and fell outside a store in central west Sydney overnight, leaving a woman seriously injured.
The video shows the Toyota Corolla flying through the air before checking into a pet store on Parramatta Road in Leichhardt around 2 a.m.
The driver escaped injuries, but his passenger, in her 20s, had to be freed from the mess of twisted metal.
Acting Detective Inspector Sarah Dunn of NSW Police said today officers are investigating whether speed, alcohol or drugs were a factor.
The owners of the pet store, the Wambeek family, said the damage to their store was another big blow in a tough year for their business.
“We’ve just come out of COVID, and we’re just trying to get back into the rhythm of things, and it’s happening now, it’s devastating,” Stefan Wambeek said.
“It’s a family business and I love this store.
“It’s heartbreaking … it’s heartbreaking,” added Deepika Wambeek.
Acting Detective Inspector Dunn said he was lucky the stores weren’t open during the crash.
“It’s just incredibly lucky that there weren’t any stores open at this time of the morning and there were no pedestrians around, it could have been very serious and caused a lot more injuries. “she said.
The driver was taken to RPA hospital under police surveillance. The 35-year-old faces a very serious charge of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm.
